Brief Introduction

     The Chinese Society of Oceanography(CSO)is an academic and public-welfare social incorporated association Voluntarily organized by the ocean scientists and technologists and the sea-related units.It is an important social force in the development of the course of ocean science and technology of china.
     Registered in the Ministry of Civil Affairs and established in July 1979,CSO is attached to zhe State Oceanic Administration and under the professional guidance of the Chinese Association for Science and technology. Affiliated to CSO are 12 branches and 9 professional committees with 8000 individual members and 180 incorporated members.It is the Chinese branch of the Pacific Congress on Science and Techoligy(PACON).
     CSO regards an its own duty the development of the course of ocean science and technology.The scope of CSO`s task is :
     1.to carry out ocean scientific and technological exchange ,play the full role of academic exchange in creation dissmination,proliferation,transfer and application of the knoledge ,and to promote the prosperity of science and advancement of technology;
     2.to carry out non-governmental ,international scientific and technological exchange and academic activities with HongKong,Macao and TaiWan districts,and promote the communication and cooperation with ocean scientific and technological bodies and individuals both at home and abroad;
     3.to organize the ocean scientists and technologists to participate in the state ocean policy ,ocean development strategy,ocean development planning and laws and regulations of the sea,and to provide advice for decision-making;
     4.to organize the ocean scientists and technologists to participate in the formulation of major ocean scientific and technolojical projeces and socio-economic projects ,provide recommendations and countermeasures,and to participate scientific research and investigations;
     5.to carry out ocean technological innovation,develop new and high ocean technology,develop new ,hige technological products,and to promote ocean industrialization;
     6.to undertake evaluation of the ocean projects ,verification of the results of the research projeces,appraisal of the qualification of the technical postions and editing of the ocean literature and standards on a commission basis;
     7.to provide technical consultation and technological information services,sponsor international ocean exhibitions,and to spread the results of ocean science and technology;
     8.to popularize the knowledge on ocean science and technology,sponsor exhibitions on popularization of ocean sciences,technological training courses and summer camps,produce films on popular ocean science,and to disseminate scientific spirit,scientific thoughts and technological activities;
     9.to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the ocean scientists and technologists,carry out continuing education,recommend excellent talents,commend and award the ocean scientists and technologists who have made excellent achievement in the ocean scientific and technological activities;
     10.to run such ocean academic publications sciense popular sciene publications an Acta Oceanological Sinica ,Ocean Enginnering and Ocean World ,and edit ,publish and distribute ocean scientific and technological books and related audio and video products.
     Looking forward to the future ,CSO will further organize and unite the marine workers all over the country to keep up the spirit of plain living and hair struggle,the pioneering spirit and the enterprising spirit ,making its new achievements,realize its new development,and to make contribution for taking off the ocean course in the new century.
